Elijah agreed. "It is alright. We are on our way. they can't get into too much trouble in this time..."

Simon could disappear for a couple of days again, like the last time things had gotten really bad. But he had stayed today, Ben told himself. Perhaps he had gotten through to his son at last. "I suppose."

Elijah spoke,quietly. "It's important you don't push yourself...."

"I'm alright, Elijah." he said, rather breathlessly and he mentally told himself off for the weakness that Elijah could see.

Elijah frowned. "I don't believe you. Come on, Ben. Let me help. you have always helped me when I need it. Am I not allowed to return the favor?"

"I'm fine, Elijah!" He said, his voice suddenly hard and authoritative.

Elijah jumped and stared at him surprised. "Are you so proud you have to lie to me?"

Ben felt a wave of anger. But then he sighed. "I'm sorry, Elijah." He stopped walking and sighed again. "I have to stay strong for those bairns."

Elijah shook his head. "You still shouldn't push yourself. You will always be strong to us. It isn't about your body but your spirit and heart. You will always be seen as a source of strength and stability as long as you are still around for them when they need you."

"They need me on the boat," he said through gritted teeth while he forced himself to walk on at normal pace. He had felt his strength declining over time, but this weakness was rare. It disturbed him.
