Can't Stay Out of Others' Business - Elijah Crane - 09-09-2019

Elijah was by to check on Ben. He truly hoped no one had seen what he had done for Simon. He slightly worried the man would disown him as a friend if he did. The new constable also wanted to make sure Simon got home safely. He couldn't help but worry after all he knew.

As he came up to the door he nodded to the kids outside and knocked. "Ben? I came by." He wanted to come by after dinner, but he wasn't sure as he also wanted to come before Simon would have left for drinking or..  He felt a small blush on his face wondering how many people could actually be that way in town. He certainly hadn't known there were any! Then again he didn't know about Simon either.

After the events of yesterday, one could say the tension was still sharply felt by all members of the family. Most were sitting outside to work while they could. Ben fixing a net. Simon attaching bait to new fishlines. Rose fixing a hole in a shirt. And the other children with their own chores. None of them were speaking. Some of the younger children exchanged glances now and then. But even little Bram was sitting entirely still at his chore.

Rose looked up, but then cast her eyes down. Simon never looked up at all. Ben looked up when he saw Elijah. Yesterday had been uncomfortable, but the young man was like family. "Elijah. Good to see you. Rose. Please fetch Elijah a chair and prepare him some tea." Instantly, the child put her work down, got up and rushed up the steps to their cottage.

Elijah thanked him quietly. He waited for her to return and took the offered seat. "That's very kind of you, Rose.' He gave her a small smile and took the tea. He looked back at Ben. Simon hadn't been kicked out, that was good. He took a nervous breath. To mention yesterday or not? "How.. was fishing today?" Not yet, at least.

Rose nodded and quietly sat back down. "Eh, same as always." Ben said. Awkward, it had been. But it was hardly the first conflict. He had tried to talk sense into Simon. Simon had been quiet. They had continued working. "How's work?"

Elijah shrugged slightly and took a moment to answer, cooling his tea. "Same as always. There was a fight at a pub. No one seriously hurt though.."

"That's one thing at least." And the silence settled in again. At least there was noise coming from other families. But it could barely lift the tension here.

Elijah nodded and glanced at his feet. "Yeah. It's pretty quiet for the most part. One good thing about this place..."

"Aye, could be quieter for my part, but I'd guess you'd have nothing to do." Ben said.

Silence.

Elijah shook his head and smiled. "We do more than stop bad guys. You know that. I could help with all sorts of nicer things."He wasn't exactly sure what, but he'd have found something.

Ben nodded. "Aye, that's true..."
