"Da' says they're evil and put our lot in jail." the boy stated. He continued to eat.

Elijah nodded. "Well it is true. I have put your family in jail more than once. But if someone hurt you or tried to take your money, you would want them in jail at least for a little, wouldn't you?"

"I would stab 'em." James stated.

Elijah blinked and smiled weakly. "If you stab them they might stab you back or have their friends do it. Before you realize it, everyone is town is stabbing each other, and you can't sort who is stabbing because they were wronged and who just likes to stab. That's why we have laws and rules."

"Da' says the laws are there to keep us at the bottom." James argued.

Elijah shook his head. "They don't help , but most of the laws, the ones I care about, are the ones that keep people safe and keep someone from stealing from another."

"Some people go hungry if they don't steal," the child argued.

Elijah nodded, "That is very true and very sad. If I find someone stealing food, I usually go very easy on them and try to help them find a way to have food. I don't want people going hungry in my town." He gestured towards the food in front of James as if an example.

"So you don't put them in prison?" he asked.

Elijah shook his head. "I might but them in jail over night, but then I feed that person, and that is if they don't need the food for someone. Then I help make sure the ones who need the food are alright and have them do a little jail time later when it's more convenient. I don't want to hurt people, I feel like that is the opposite of what my job is about.'
