When Ben had first heard that Alice was pregnant, he had been certain that the best course of action was for her to marry the person who had made her pregnant. But when he had heard it was Noah Longbottom... If Noah was anything like his parents - and his behaviour so far had given Ben no reason to doubt that - then he might do her more harm than good, even considering her compromised state. And yet, what choice was there? Perhaps he could frighten the boy into better behaviour. And not all children turned out like their parents. Claude hadn't. Ben hadn't.
He never visited the Longbottom's. Some of their children had sometimes visited his home, but he had never allowed his own to go over to theirs. He pitied the children but despised the parents, and Ben went out of his way to avoid them, and demanded the same of his children. But today, he made his way to the Longbottom's yard. He hoped to find Claude.
