It was Sunday afternoon and Rose was wearing her Sunday dress. She knocked on the door of the Llewellyn home. She felt her hair to see to it that there were no loose hairs and straightened her skirt. She always felt a little nervous when dealing with the vicar. Father said all people were created equal and even in the church, though some were wiser and more learned, they were all equal in the eyes of God. Still, when Rose saw the priest on the pulpit, looking so knowledgeable and severe, she couldn't help feeling intimidated. She wasn't sure whether she believed in God the way she used to, but she could still feel the wrath and judgement pressing her down sometimes.

Sundays were Kestrel's least favorite days. Her father was always in a right horrible mood behind closed doors. Ranting in his quiet voice about how people were bound to end up in hell. Not men like him of course but women like Kestrel and everyone else. At the moment he was quiet though, reading the bible as he did while Kestrel prepared something for him to eat for midday. It was a simple meal but it was more than Kes herself would get.

The knock on the door came as a bit of a surprise to them both and they glanced up. Kes was wiping her hands on her apron even as her father's gaze cut to her. A glare that said she'd been perhaps, a bit too slow. She apologized softly and turned to head toward the door. The home they lived in was small, which suited Cornelius' desire for humility. Kes smiled at Rose and stepped back slightly, allowing her entrance into the home.  Her father was all smiles as he rose to his feet to greet her.

Rose gave Kestrel a grateful smile and stepped in nervously. It was a modest accommodation. Better perhaps than the two-room cottage and yard with open sewers and shared toilet house that Rose was used to, but not what one would expect from a minister. Father spoke highly of the Llewellyn's. They did not think themselves better than others and excelled in Christian humility. "I hope I'm not disturbing father Llewellyn." Rose said, her usually loud voice quiet and subdued. My father was wondering if you and Kestrel would do us the honour of coming for dinner tonight?"
