Elijah had let go of his post when he saw the man fall over board. They were close enough he tossed a ring to them. Just as he was about to get back, he heard another and frowned. He wanted to focus on the boat, but he couldn't help but worry. Even though it was ridiculous to think anyone would go into the water without knowing how to swim. He tossed the other ring out to Nate and apologized to Ben as he took his place and tugged on the rope with all his might. He didn't care about winning but the money could be so useful to the others.

The unfortunate soul disappeared under the water several times before resurfacing, so Tristan worried that he was a poor swimmer. Why was nobody helping that man!?

Because Zechariah Meijer was on the boat closest to him. That was probably why!

Tristan abandoned his post completely to join Tobias in shouting when he saw Tobias' brother go overboard too. "Turn round! Turn round! We have to help them!" he shouted at the captain.

Oh thank God! And he didn't even believe in one! Bless constable Crane. At least the men had something to hold on to.

Christine smiled as the others worked so well together. She was very proud of Ellie who was quite a sailor. But seeing that they couldn't quite beat the ship ahead of them was fine, seeing the other ship coming closer was not fine. She immediately nodded to the woman named Alice. "Alright, I think I have it." The woman wasn't strong and was nervous actually doing something, but she gripped the rudder and moved it as she had been shown. Perhaps this part wouldn't be so bad after all. She waved to the ship behind them briefly.

"I told you! Leave my crew alone!"

She laughed and smiled at the others. "You're all amazing! At this rate, we'll have second place for sure!"

Murphy nodded to Mehmet. "They are coming fast. We need to keep going."

The worry in Tristan had the man look over and he nodded towards the rings. They'd be ok until rescue came if they had trouble getting to shore, he figured. "They'll be alright. Let's focus going forward. No one fall off!' He called out, because now he realized he had to worry about his own crew.

"We're in first. It'd be nice to stay that way." Of course, he couldn't blame his men if they didn't win. There were other good boats, and the women's crew seemed to have some knowledgeable people on board where he had been teaching everybody, but they were doing well and he was proud of them.

He took the wheel again and patted Mehmet on the back. "Good job."

Alice hadn't joined Lory like she had written she would. Anne hadn't dared to ask about it, as that would mean confessing that she had read the letter. Guilt had eaten her up while she joined her sister and her family to watch Tobias and her father and brother, but at least she was by Alice's side.

Hey, Mr. Nate Appleton was participating too! Anne found herself quietly rooting for him and his - ew, Noah. No, she rooted just for him. The sea could take Noah on their way!

Oh no! Was that Lory, actually?! On a boat!? Surely, she wasn't participating. It was bad luck for women to go out to sea! Hey... The young stranger who had taught her to dance. Did Lory know him then? Anne looked away, lest he would see her and wave at her and someone would see. She had avoided getting in trouble by begging their neighbour not to tell her father and offering to mind her kids for her. She didn't think she would be as lucky a second time.

She didn't think much of it when Alice went away, but when she looked at Lory's boat again...

It had been code! Oh no, how wicked! How she would get in trouble! They all would once her father saw and got into one of his moods... Oh no... he had seen alright, and so had Tobias.

Anne's fingers covered her lips as she watched nervously.

They all looked so good on that boat though, Ellie, Lory, Chéri, the lady, and Alice... Alice was beaming! And Ellie looked so much healthier and prettier than last time Anne had seen her. For a moment, Anne wished she was bold and disobedient like Lory and Alice and that she too was on the boat.

When it left the harbour, she left her spot and ran for the pier, trying to push through the crowd to see what would happen. They were even ahead of her father!

The ring, so kindly tossed out to help him, smacked the back of Edwin's head and knocked him back under the water.

"SHARK!" he yelled upon resurfacing. "THERE'S A-"

Oh. Edwin grabbed onto the item that was definitely not a shark. Were there even any sharks in Whitby?

"Thank you, sir!" he shouted, waving an arm wildly in the direction of the boat and splashing his way into the floating thing.

Zechariah could scream forever … but enough of his mind came back to him to remember that would not look good when they won. With two men and a child in the boat. Noah was still holding on, right?

He heard insane cackling and threw his head over his shoulder to gawk. Did that sailor even know how to swim? What kind of sailor did not know how to swim? For the first time, Zechariah questioned the ‘sailor’s lie tale of prowess.

Shockingly, with two less on the boat it was going faster! They were even ahead of some of those damned Carringtons! And one of the boats ahead of him? Crane! Handsome, thoughtful Crane! He smiled when Crane had the fast thinking to toss some rings to them, even though he was sure the lifeguards would handle it. What a guy!

Wait. What boat was that? What on Earth was he doing in a Ward’s boat!?

“Crane!” he shouted, still clinging to the mast [uselessly] for dear life.

He gestured angrily at Crane’s boat of choice, though his expression looked more confused.

“Why!?”

“You finished yet?” asked the less drunk lifeguard.

“… Yeah!” the other realized, then frowned. “But now I gotta piss.”

Benny was angry that his boss was yelling at other boats despite he was single handedly driving the ship. "You hired idiots." He told his boss as he struggled to not trip on the boy on the ground and keep things going. He was proud they weren't lagging behind or crashing... yet.
