[[Content warning: Dead bodies, probably]]
Anne wondered if she had gone crazy. Surely the very idea of her being independent and making her own money was preposterous. And to think that she had to disobey father and lie for it too. Anne hardly recognized herself. But she was here. It was Tuesday evening and father thought she was at Bible study like every week. But Anne had told Mrs. Gibson that she could not attend Bible study or Sunday school anymore, because with Alice gone, and father's poor health, there was too much to do at home, and she had to look after her brothers. Mrs. Gibson was the wife of a rather well-to-do banker, and she hardly spoke to fishermen like her father, so Anne hoped that he would not find out. And so, she had slipped her Bible in her bag and had moved to Mrs. Gibson's home, but turned a corner where she should have gone straight ahead and rushed to the funeral home instead. She knocked on the door, rather out of breath, because she had run the last bit and was feeling nervous.
