Rose nodded. For her however, it was different. She had never considered the possibility that she could be a rich person's equal. That her master would have to speak to her with the same respect as she used when speaking to him. That it was unfair that he had that grand house to himself, while she had always shared a bed with several siblings. That it was unfair that the doctor came rushing to a rich person's home, and none had come to see mother when she was dying. That their lives could be worth as much as those of the people she had worked for. George had held such views, and she had started questioning some things, but now it hit her with full force. Was she not born in exactly the same way as the rich folks she stepped out of the way for in the streets? Would they not all return to the dust once?
