Lorn looked around and thought about his family ranch back home in Texas. "We have a huge dining room back home in Texas, but as much Mom tries to make it fancy the light that comes in and heat makes things fade fast. Once we got established there, Mom started adding fancy-looking things to be more like the home country. I was too little when we left Denmark. I think 5." He thought of what he now remembered (there for a while he had blocked the traumatic memories) why they had left to start over in the US with a frown of sadness then continued, "So, I don't remember what the home country looked like, and only vague memories of what the house had looked like before it burned down."
Looking at his own dining room, he smiled at Karen. "I just told the decorators that I liked deep blue and liked stained wood and mahogany and let them go with it. So if you like it, I guess they did great." Taking another bite of the meat, he nodded at the oil mixture. "I like it too. It is an unusual taste, but wakes up the taster." He winked dipping another bit of bread in his own.
"Scotch eggs? If that is that egg wrapped around with sausage, I've had them when I dropped off some of the horse out somewhere. I liked them. I don't know if Miss Cora has made them here though. I was going to tell her about them when I got home, but I don't know if I ever mentioned them to her or not."
When Karen put her hand on his arm, he smiled glad she felt that way. He dipped another bit of the bread and leaned over to offer to feed it to her.
Once they finish as much as they wished, and Lorn motioned to Mrs. Pearson, who was standing just outside the door to the path to the kitchen waiting for just such cues, the maids came back in one carrying a silver tray holding two bowls of a light Mushroom broth and the other an empty tray to take away the other things. One maid laid the tray with the broth on the table, then moved behind Karen from the right and took her 1st-course items and put them on the tray the other maid held, and then repeated the same process with Lorn. Then the tray was laid down as the other maid picked up the tray with the soup bowls. Again starting with Karen, the now empty-handed maid moved the bowl from the tray the other maid held and put it in front of Karen's place and repeated it with Lorn. The steaming broth had a very earthy rich aroma and some thin slices of mushrooms here and there and a bit of some herb could be seen peeking there at the edges of the bowl.
