Abilene wasn't quite expecting the question, but she realized she'd accidentally put herself in the position to need to answer it, so she quickly decided on the right way of phrasing her misfortune. "I was employed in a bakery, ser," she began, "but the fiance of my employer didn't like me working there, and so I quit, for their happiness." It was more like for Rose's jealous satisfaction, but Abilene wasn't about to admit that. She still thought about him, though she knew she shouldn't. "I'd like to leave Whitby because I..." She thought about it. "I don't want to disrupt their lives any further." She blushed. "Though nothing, er, scandalous happened, I assure you."
