Anne sat, uncomfortable. Father would disapprove if he knew she was being idle. She picked up the cat, sat her in her lap and started patting her. "How was work today?"
Elijah sat across after putting it down and shrugged. "Well, I hope you find it tastes as good as it smells." He smiled and folded his hands for prayer before eating.
Anne never ate anywhere else than home, and she almost forgot her prayers. Embarrassed, she folded her hands and closed her eyes and said a prayer silently, before beginning to eat. "It's good!"
Anne ate eagerly. She was a growing girl and although father always made sure there was enough food on the table, even if it meant sparing it from his own mouth, she often still felt hungry in between meals.
Elijah ate slowly and drank his water. He was overjoyed that she enjoyed his food so much. "If you remind me, I can have a sandwich made for you to eat at lunch time so you don't go hungry so long."
