Simon had deserved everything he got, from father and from the law. He had ruined everything, and if anyone had not deserved being given money...
She heard her sister sniff and looked at her. Alice put her arm around her.

Rose through felt the words rip through her. Whether it was the painful memories of what had happened to Simon or the painful question of who was responsible, she didn't reflect on. Both weighed on her and pressed the air out of her. "Elijah!" she called out desperately in a broke voice. "Please! Stop!"

Here it was, out in the open. Ben was more of an ass than Tobias had known, much as he had suspected it. He'd be very happy not to listen to it. He looked over at the boat. Alice and her cousin were the only Ward girls not crying. He wondered how much the violence had been directed towards the girls as well. No wonder Alice and Anne had risked their lives on the moors. No wonder Alice had turned out the way she had.

Ben stopped struggling when Elijah mentioned Simon. He no longer resisted when the other man took his legs. He just breathed. A high breathing. A shaky breathing. "Let's go then." He said in a shaky voice. "I'll walk. I won't resist."

There was a lot here that he did not understand, but he gathered that this man was violent with his own children, and that child Simon was no longer alive, and it was somehow caused by this. Poor Alice. What had been done to her? Those poor other girls.
But seriously, did nobody notice that bike accident?
He nodded at Mr. Meijer and then hurried over to help Mehmet and the lady up. Ugh... She smelled of alcohol and worse. "Are you alright?" he asked them both.

Bram appeared from the crowd and ran towards the two men arresting his father. "No! Let go of him!" he shouted. "Elijah!" He pulled at the arm of the man who was holding his father's legs, and kicked his shin.

Elijah frowned and didn't want to look Bram or any of the Wards in the face. He nodded to Murphy who gently put him back down. "I'm sorry, Bram. But he attacked someone. Your dad knew he isn't supposed to hurt people, and I can't warn him anymore. Go to your sisters." He winced at the kick and led Ben away trying to not fight the boy as he didn't want to shake him off roughly or anything. He could completely understand the young child's feelings. And hearing Alice call out for him to stop certainly didn't help him feel bad. But this wasn't up to them. He attacked someone not in the family, and they honestly should realize this was for the best.
"Let's go, Ben." He said as he nodded to Tobias to help him. He wondered where the hell the other constables were?

Christine sighed wondering why people wanted to put a damper on her day out. It was supposed to be fun, but it kept going down hill. She looked at the girl crying out. She was going to say something but they would just get mad, and she didn't know the weird stuff going on between them clearly. She thought him being arrested was a good thing, but kept it to herself. She knelt by the girl who'd fallen into the water. "Do you need something, dear? We can get a cab and get you home. You don't want to get sick after all."

Lory frowned, and reached to touch Anne’s arm.
Then pulled back, because what if that wet on her hand was vomit juice, too?
Her gaze shifted to Rose, and she shook her head but kept her own mouth shut.
She glanced to the pier. Her eyes landed on Tobias and narrowed.
“We would appreciate that, ma’am,” Lory accepted quickly before Alice could decline.

His head turned toward the boat full of redheads with a frown, but he turned his attention back to Wells. Blinked when he heard a crash, a belated bicycle bell-chime, and saw the tangle of limbs and bent metal on the ground.
This was … probably an ideal moment to extract himself from this mess. But then there was yet another redheaded nightmare, kicking Elijah’s leg and shouting at him to break the law for him. He stepped toward the child, keeping a comfortable distance but enough to show he was talking to him.
“Bram,” Zechariah said to the boy who had probably only seen him once. “Sometimes adults need a time-out, too. Did you collect your prize yet?”
Did second place have a prize? He had not been paying much attention to that aspect of the race.
