His father had shouted at him for showing up with an eyepatch. Reluctantly, he had taken it off and now he followed orders sheepishly. He supposed he had to be a mate and follow orders before he could be a real pirate.
He looked back when he heard a splash. There was a man in the water. They had made him walk the plank! He pointed at Noah. "And keelhaul 'im!" he shouted at the other crew of the boat behind them. Noah was a traitor after all.

He should get an award for even showing up with his hangover! Look, maybe he had lied about how much he knew about sailing. But it was there somewhere. He had learned it once. It was just a long time ago and he wasn't in the best state to be out on the water, that was all.
God, he felt sick.
At least he had negotiated a good pay whatever the result.
"James, stop shoutin' at that cunt and mind that bloody rudder!" Then he pointed at the rich fuck. "You, take hold of that..." Uh oh....
He ran for the side of the boat and threw up. Alas, he didn't make it to the hull.

The boat rocked. Everything slid to one side of the deck, then rocked back the other.
“GET THEM!” he hollered, because this was clearly an effective way to incentivize a boat that had just lost a man to do better.
The boat rocked harder. Hard enough to jettison Alice’s husband that Nathaniel fellow off the opposite side Edwin had flew off. Zechariah, in all the dignity and bravery that was called for in such a moment, was doing the only thing a reasonable man ought do: clinging to the mast, screaming.

“Hey!” one of the life guards barked, swigging a beer. “Think there’s two down, now!”
“Yeah?” the other grunted back. “Think we should launch?”
“… Yeah!” he agreed. “Hold on.”
Said lifeguard tipped his head back, chugging.

Christine heard a splash and by the time she looked back, a boat at the rear had lost two men! She laughed and turned back to her crew and threw up an arm as she clung to a rope so she wouldn't join them in a possibly watery grave. "We're doing so well! You all make me wonderfully proud. Just focus on getting there safely and I'll pay for a feast for dinner!" She said cheerfully, though she honestly was going to do that anyway.
They were right behind one boat but it was powered by big men who seemed at least partially aware of what they were doing. At least one did as he was now and again calling out an order. It was another boat that had started late and was coming up behind them she worried about taking over, but third place would still be wonderful for an almost all women crew.

Murphy nodded to Mehmet as he looked at the water, and his head turned as he thought he caught a glimpse of his boys. The man didn't smile, but his eyebrows raised to show his joy as he waved a hand to the side. He decided to take control of the one difficult part of the ship. He waved Mehmet over to the wheel since the other man could stop his current task for a moment. "Keep it steady.." He said before he approached Tobias, knowing he had to be quick to get back to the wheel.
He pulled the man away so he wouldn't keep looking at the other ship. "Don't make the crew do your work. Come on, you know what to do." He said confident that he had paid attention to the rushed lesson that morning, all these men seemed intelligent enough to do it.
"You get to the finishing line, you can wait for her there, alright?" He didn't know what was going on, it seemed silly since he seemed mad at her being on a boat when he was on one as well. Murphy turned and hurried on his cane to the wheel.

Darius was about to glare at the old man who was shouting at him to do something. He had hired them to run the ship and he'd just stand there and look nice. They all said they knew how to sail, and here he was stuck with a man drunker than himself, a boy, and another man who was at least attempting to do his job though he seemed completely rusty and kept pausing to remember things.
And then there was the goat. It was tied carefully to the mast so it wouldn't be able to fall over board but the damned thing was eating the ropes!

Another man over board! And his boss was screaming his head off at the mast. He had never wanted to slap the man so hard as he did now. He felt like he was on the ship alone, and he realized he practically was. All Benny could do was run to secure the sail, making sure it was tied tight in the right direction. Then he ran with the rocking of the boat to the wheel. He took hold of it and used all of his strength to push it so that it would start going in the right direction as he prayed to whatever powers he'd ever heard of to let him regain control of this thing so they didn't crash or worse, humiliate him in front of his boss. Even though the man was clearly more pathetic than him at the moment.

Her father’s and Tobias’ shouting didn’t frighten her. Made her feel smug, rather, for she was disobeying them and neither of them could do a thing about it right now. To hell with the future. In this moment she was perfectly free. She glanced briefly at Tobias, didn’t even look in her father’s direction and tossed her head up in the wind.
A smirk played around the corner of her mouth when their team’s captain shouted at Tobias and her father that they couldn’t have her. She blushed and glowed with delight as she moved to the back to the back of the ship to handle the rudder. She was determined that they should win too, or at least beat Tobias’ team! Maybe then he would see that she was not as helpless and dull as he seemed to think she was.
She sat down by the rudder, looking out over the boat and harbour to determine their course, and then back at the rudder. But she lifted her eyes when she heard a splash. There was already a man in the water behind them. That was Mr. Meijer’s team, she realized. And there was… All the excitement left her eyes met Noah’s staring at her.
He had broken her heart.
Then she inhaled sharply through the nose, frowned angrily and turned to the girls in her boat. “Tighten that sail a little. Come on!” They would win this race!
“I’ll show ye how to handle t’ rudder, ma’m!” she told the lady when she asked what she could do. She began to explain to Miss Pennyfeather how the rudder worked and how to handle it, while handling it herself to the best of her ability. She looked up anxiously now and then to see their progress. They were even ahead of her father’s team! If only they could catch up on Tobias’. She grinned back at Lory when her cousin called out to her. “Let’s cut them off!” She shouted back.
Another splash. She turned her head. Alas, it wasn’t Noah.
