RE: Business to settle - Anthony Rowe - 06-06-2020

It took a few minutes for Anthony to return to consciousness. He winced slightly as he heard a man talk — he couldn't exactly understand what he was saying, but he understood that he was saying something. As soon as he opened his eyes, all the pain and discomfort from the beating came rushing back. He almost preferred whatever the hell that was, over the pain. "...What?"

Gabriel wasn't sure what to do, but he knew he couldn't just leave the man here in the cold to find a doctor. He might freeze. The presbytery wasn't far. "C'mon, let's get you inside." He took a deep breath, and then managed to pick the man up. He was small and light, and though Gabriel was skinny himself, he was taller. He carried him to the presbytery which was only a few houses away and jammed on the door with his foot.

When the housekeeper opened the door and saw the scene she gasped. "Oh, father, this must really stop!" But she stepped out of the way to let him in.

Anthony figured that this wasn't worth the effort of trying and staying awake, and just closed his eyes again. He didn't protest at all when he was picked up, and instead just limply let himself be carried away. It was surprisingly comfortable, and he would have likely fallen asleep, were it not for the cold and immense pain. Truthfully, he didn't really care about where he was being taken — he was still a bit too out of it to try and care. He heard people speak, again, but as he wasn't focusing on what they were saying, he couldn't make out what it was.

Gabriel put him down on the sofa in the drawing room. "Heat some water and tend to his wounds," Gabriel ordered the housekeeper, who clicked her tongue in disapproval, but did as she was told. Gabriel left to fetch the doctor.

"Don't know why father Richard keeps bringing in folk like you," the woman said when she returned to the room and started cleaning the unconscious man's face. "I know yer lot, always gettin' drunk and picking fights in t' streets. It serves ye just right if ye ask me."

Anthony was slightly disappointed when he the man put him down, but he was still comfortable so it didn't matter too much. He kept falling in and out of unconsciousness. He frowned as soon as he felt someone touch his face and made a noise of disapproval, but didn't protest any further. It was uncomfortable, but it didn't seem as if it'd stop anytime soon, so he just kept silent and tried to wait patiently for it to end.

At some point Gabriel returned with the doctor and the housekeeper finally left him alone. The doctor examined Anthony. "Took a heavy beating, but no internal bleeding, luckily," he concluded. "We'll have to see about the damage to the head.... Sir, can you hear me?" he asked Anthony.

Anthony let the doctor examine him, without causing a fuss. That was one positive thing about him being half-conscious — he was too tired to even try and protest. He tried his damnedest to stay awake now, though it was difficult as hell. Anthony just stared blankly at the doctor as he spoke. He understood that he was talking and he understood the words he was saying, but he somehow couldn't yet comprehend the question itself.

The doctor frowned. "Can you hear me?" he tried again. "It's enough to just nod..."

Gabriel folded his arms and frowned down at Anthony. Though he had been somewhat irritated about feeling obliged to bring the man here, before, he was now glad he hadn't left him out there.

It finally hit him. Anthony nodded once, and still kept staring at the doctor like a deer in headlights. He was basically just waiting for this to be over so that he could go to sleep or something — this was tiring.

"Alright..." the doctor said. He stood up and turned to Gabriel. "I'll leave something to treat the pain. He needs to be woken up every two hours and you'll have to do the same test. If he won't wake or doesn't respond, please fetch me."

When the doctor was gone, Gabriel sat down by Anthony's side and handed him two pills and a cup. "Here. The doctor says this will ease your pain."
