Menachem shook his head and checked the clock to see if it was of any value. He was careful where he stepped and looked to the closed door. He stepped close and tried to open it quietly.

The door opened. In the other room was a bed and a dresser. Two teenage girls slept in the bed. Bram sat up and blinked at the stranger in the dark.

Menachem didn't even consider someone was awake. He just snuck in to check the dresser. He figured they were fast asleep and if not, perhaps he could scare them into being quiet.

Anne went back to sleep, but there was stirring in the other room. There was some whispering, and then hurried, heavy footsteps.

Menachem's eyes widened and he immediately moved to hide behind the door. Fist ready if he had to get out. It was just the old man and kids.

Ben burst into the room and looked around. Instantly, Alice and Anne sat up.
"What's going on?" Alice shrieked.

Menachem held his breath pressing back to the wall hoping no one noticed, though he'd fight his way out if he had to.

Ben looked around and calmed. "There's nowt 'ere... Y'had a dream, Bram!" he shouted back at the little boy who had sat up.
"What is going on?" Alice asked anxiously.
"It's nowt lass... Bram thought 'e saw someone enter yer room.
Bram, who was not satisfied, came running, kneeled down and looked under the bed.
