Alice was born in 1878. Her parents belonged to the fishing community of Whitby. She had two older brothers, two older sisters, two younger sisters and two younger brothers.
When Alice went to school, she was lazy and full of mischief at first. Her father had threatened the teacher after he had mistreated her older brother, Simon, and he was now afraid to get in trouble with the Ward children. However, when the teacher was replaced, Alice soon learned that she would have to make an effort. It paid off. As it turned out, Alice was good at learning. She enjoyed showing it off, for in a large family, it was the only way to distinguish herself and get attention. And so she worked hard, especially after her teacher talked to her parents and suggested Alice might be a teacher one day.
Unfortunately, her family would face several misfortunes that would finally kill that dream. Her oldest brother Tom drowned when she was ten. When Alice was eleven, a dangerous form of influenza hit town and her mother and baby sister died and Alice herself fell very sick and barely survived. She was weakly for a long time after this and fell behind on her school work. Tensions and occasional violence at home made her thankful for being able to go to school still, but also distracted her.
Then when Alice was thirteen, her brother Simon was arrested for murdering someone, and with him gone, the family needed to work twice as hard, and Alice was finally pulled out of school and put to work. She felt selfish for being sad about that, while her family was concerned with her brother's fate, but she couldn't help it. During Lent the next year, her brother was condemned and hanged in York prison and the family struggled on.
Alice slowly forgot her dream of becoming a teacher and came to accept that her future would lie in finding a good husband and starting her own family. She was indeed eager to get married for at home she still felt uncomfortable, nervous and estranged.
But marriage did not come the way she had planned. She fell in love with a boy who had been a friend and sometimes enemy since childhood, Noah Longbottom. When she fell pregnant, several months ago, and told him, however, he pretended not to know her. Alice tried to get rid of the unborn and when that didn't work, cover it up, but when it became hard to hide, she ran away, together with her younger sister Anne. The girls got lost on the moors and almost died, but where saved by a local farmer, Tobias.
When her father found out the truth, he was determined that Alice should marry as soon as possible. The farmer, explaining that he could not have children of his own, proposed to marry her, and Alice, seeing no other option, agreed.
Alice finds it hard to settle into her new life. She is no longer afraid of her husband, like she was in the beginning, but she dislikes him, and she is lonely. The community of Castleton, where she now lives, is full of gossip about her, and her new life and the expectations that come with it overwhelm her. |
