Anne was born in 1879 in a fishing family. She had two older brothers and three older sisters, and would later have two younger brothers and a younger sister as well. She went to school for a few years, but didn't enjoy it much. Although she was not 'stupid' like one of her older brothers and her father had been in school, she was not as bright as her older sister Alice, and was always in her shadow.
Anne's parents were strict but loving, and Anne, who was naturally introverted, kept her head down and behaved to avoid trouble.
When Anne was eight, her oldest brother Tom died. It changed a lot in the family, with her parents grieving and growing troubles with their second son Simon.
When Anne had just turned ten, her mother and baby sister passed away. She felt lost, although her oldest sister Maggie tried to look after the children. Anne responded by withdrawing more. She would imagine herself elsewhere and tell herself stories to cope. Her father and brother fought more often, with her father sometimes turning quite violent. Anne retreated into her own world. When Maggie married, half a year later, she felt betrayed.
Her brother Simon, meanwhile, had become more rebellious and her father more determined to correct him. Anne knew something would go wrong at some point, but she didn't know what to do. She stayed as quiet and obedient as possible to avoid additional strain on the family.
When Anne had just turned twelve, Simon was arrested for murdering a man. He was hanged during Lent the next year. The family struggled both with grief and confusion, and with their difficult financial situation. Anne's sister Rose was sent to York to serve in a home. Her other sister Alice, who had remained in school to become a teacher, was taken out to work.
Very slowly, things settled down. The past two years or so have been more quiet, although Anne has seen her father burdened under grief and his health is declining. Anne loves him, but in still afraid of him. She is also afraid of losing another sibling, or of other trouble in the family. She just tries to be kind and quiet and keep everyone happy. |
