History: Georgiana Selby, was born as Georgina Clifford in Devon in 1832 to a baron and his wife. She spent most of her early childhood with her siblings in the manor in Devon in the care of her nurse and governess. When she was a little older, she was occasionally allowed to come up to the family residence in London and her parents would sometimes take her out to the park, a museum, or another activity. Old enough to not be in the way, she was also taken on family holidays to the Côte d’Azur, where her parents would rent a home each summer. At eight, she went to a good school in Canterbury. Then at eleven she was sent to a school in Switzerland. In these schools she received an excellent education, both in academic subjects, such as mathematics, history, Latin and Greek, and in subjects such as music, drawing, dancing and etiquette.

As an intelligent and inquisitive child, Georgiana enjoyed learning and did well in her studies. She had a particular knack for languages. Quiet daydreams about all the places she would visit as an adult encouraged her to work hard. But her real passion lay in music and art. Her own little musical and artistic successes were the result of a diligent study of technique and hard practice rather than talent, and a short-lived dream to become a painter was soon given up. Even as a girl, Georgiana hated wasting her time. There was so much else she could do and aspire to. Nevertheless, her school years nourished a lifelong love of art and music. While still in school, she wrote to famous artists and musicians to express her devotion to their work, and she was very excited and a little bit smug when they wrote back. Hence, despite her sheltered school years, by the time she was ready to make her debut in society, she was already personally acquainted with several great names.

Georgiana was presented at court and then attended the social season in London, to fulfil the crowning achievement of her upbringing: finding a husband. She enjoyed life in London: the parties, the dinners, the gossip, the opera, the museums. But it annoyed her that very few people saw her as more than a pretty girl with pretty manners in search of a husband. She knew she needed to settle soon with someone well-connected and well-respected, so that people would stop seeing her as a ‘girl’ and actually take her seriously.

When Lord Jeremy Selby, an earl nearly 30 years her senior, tried to court her, she decided on him and they were married a few months later. She didn’t think him particularly handsome, but she admired him intellectually and liked that he was interested in what she had to say. They shared an interest in art, music, and exploring the world, and his status and money made a life of decadence possible. Everyone would take her seriously as Lady Selby.

Indeed, as husband and wife, they travelled the world, expanded their social circles, pursued their interests and passions to their heart’s desire, and enjoyed each other’s company. They had the mutual respect to be discrete about their affairs and about each others affairs. Georgiana always looked back on it as a match well made. In her own words, they loved each other, but never passionately, and so it was a happy marriage.

They had four children: three girls and a boy, but sadly the boy died at four years old and they never had another boy. Georgiana and her husband therefore took a keen interest in the nephew who was to be Jeremy’s heir, Albert Selby. They often invited Albert over during his school holidays and later, and Jeremy would take him out hunting, introduce him to people, and teach him about politics, while trying to influence his moral and intellectual upbringing. Georgiana found the boy to be polite, intelligent, ambitious, and capable of stimulating conversation. She grew fonder of him than of her own daughters, whom she considered intellectually mediocre and artistically tone deaf, and whose only purpose, it seemed to her, was to be married off as soon as possible. She made sure none of her own circle of interesting people got stuck with them.

Jeremy passed away in 1874, when Georgiana was 42. Although she grieved over him, it didn’t last long. He had left her a large amount of money, her daughters were married, and her nephew, who had inherited the title and estate, liked her and made sure she lived comfortably. Now, for the first time in her life, she was rich, respected, and had no one above her and no one to consider but herself, all at the same time. She frequently visited her acquaintances all over Europe, and hosted dinner parties for her still expanding circle of interesting people at her homes in London, York, and Whitby. For the past two decades, she has lived life to the fullest, but is still ever hungry for more stimulation for her insatiable mind.

Her daughters hardly ever visit her or write to her. Georgiana intends to spend all her money before she dies.
OOC Preferences: No limits in language. For violence, please discuss any maiming, torture, death, or harm to a child with me first. For sexual content, no rape (see rules as well!). I generally suck at NSFW threads.

Unless otherwise discussed, I will consider a thread dead/finished and move on if I haven’t had a reply in a month (a oneliner is A-ok. I just hate my plots stagnating and my character trapped in time). I’ll probably nudge you a week before or so, in case it fell off your radar.

If we are in a group thread, I would like everyone to have a chance to reply in turn. However, if I bombed your thread, don't wait for me if I'm not responding fast enough.
