Augustus was born in the summer of 1840, to a wealthy family which had risen up in the years following the napoleonic wars
His Grandfather, Augustus. Started the company upon returning to whitby after the war had finished and had bought a clipper to do shipping & his father joined the company when old enough to do so
Augustus III wasnt as lucky at first he had to attend boarding school before being shipped off once more to college and university where he studied politics.
Augustus was also part of the sports teams for college, taking part in tournaments for rugby and fencing
He would return to whitby after his studies and work within the family business learning the ropes and building ideas for the future
When he turned 43 his father died and left the business to Augustus III, with this he decided ro reform the business and placed an order for three brand new cargo steamers to be based out of whitby, One running back and forth between the uk and India (SS Fairmead), One between the uk and america (SS Meadowfield) and the other one to Europe (SS Whitehall). all of which would enter service by 1890
the company would also invest in warehousing down in whitby docks as well as covered horsedrawn wagons to move freight.
by 1895, a fourth ship (SS Arundel) was almost complete and about to start sea trials
At the age of 30, Augustus would return to his political routes and become the liberal party (later becoming the liberal democrats) leader for whitby and would stand for office. |
