Hezekiah is not a small man, though he has become thinner since the death of his wife. Taking proper care of himself is a hard task on even the best of days. Oftentimes, his clothes are wrinkled and he is in need of a shave and a good meal. Late in the afternoons, his eyes are puffy and red with freshly shed tears. |

Hezekiah grew up a simple boy in a simple family, and all he ever wanted was a simple life. As a young boy, he met for the first time a lovely girl named Charlotte and it was love at first sight. They were childhood sweethearts, and though Charlotte lived in the seaside town of Whitby, her heart and thoughts were always with Hezekiah.
As soon as they were old enough, they were married and Hezekiah moved to Whitby to be with Charlotte. He worked as a fishmonger as Charlotte’s father was a fisherman, and life was good.
When it was discovered that Charlotte would soon be having a child, both she and Hezekiah were ecstatic. But the good news ended there, as Charlotte’s father died while working on the sea. Charlotte became sick with grief all throughout her pregnancy, and did not survive through the birth of her son, Kit.
Hezekiah was devastated. The love of his life, the one person in the world that meant the most to him was gone. The man isolated himself away from the rest of his family save for his newborn son, and is still mourning Charlotte.
Not much had changed fifteen years later. Kit is growing up to be a man, not that Hezekiah is paying him much attention. The days go by slow and the years go by fast and his heart bleeds everyday for Charlotte. |
