The only child born to Edward and Caroline St. Clair, Stephanie grew up on a luxurious estate in the country and an equally splendid mansion in the best part of London. Her mother was a wealthy heiress and her father managed his wife’s business interests and investments after the death of Stephanie’s grandfather. She was loved and cherished and given everything her heart desired. Until she was almost eleven, she lived a charmed life.
Her parents were killed in a carriage accident and she went to live with her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Unknown to her, they were heavily in debt and only wanted her to stay with them so that they would have access to her considerable inheritance. When they discovered that the money had been put in trust for her until she turned eighteen, they made Stephanie earn her keep by working long hours doing menial chores. They fed her one small meal a day, and made her wear the same dress all the time. Her cousins made fun of her and ordered her around.
She ran away six months later. With no way to support herself, she turned to stealing. Unfortunately, she was caught while trying to pick the pocket of a well-dressed man. Instead of turning her in, he took her to the theatre he managed and told her that she could atone for her crime by working for him. At first, she worked as a maid, but in the next three years, she worked her way up to mending costumes, assisting in rehearsals, and finally small acting roles. She was quite talented and envisioned a life as a rich and famous actress. Stephanie had left her old life behind her and had no desire to go back.
She was fourteen when her uncle found her and insisted that she live with his family. Though she didn’t want to go, she had no choice. Only a few months ago, she moved in with them and they hired a governess to handle her education since she had missed so much of it. They now live in a house in Whitby. Though Stephanie loves the area, she misses the theatre and plans to run away again and return to her budding acting career.
