Angus was born in Sheffield to a upper middle class family. His father had made his fortune in the iron industry and owned a factory. Angus had one older brother. His mother died after giving birth to a stillborn boy, when Angus was six. One year later his father remarried and Angus and his brother were sent off to a boarding school across the country to be out of the way of this new matrimonial bliss. He spent most of his summers with other relatives and saw little of his father and his new family, though his father sent large sums of money to the boys regularly so that they could ‘entertain themselves’ and buy all the things they needed.
At school, Angus was a shy boy at first and he got picked on a lot, but in time, he learned ‘the rules of the game’ and he became very good at winning the right friends, knowing which kids to torment to win admiration from his peers, and how to manipulate and ‘buy’ fellow students and teachers alike to get what he wanted and stay out of trouble (his father’s money came in handy). Finding himself high up in the hierarchy, Angus became both very full of himself and very anxious about the possibility of losing all this admiration and respect.
His father paid for university, but this new environment held too many new freedoms for the fragile youth. Back in school, Angus had only taken alcohol when a classmate had managed to smuggle it in or in the controlled settings of formal dinners, and had only had an experience with a woman once during a summer break. Once at university, he soon spent more time in the pub drinking and gambling with friends than in the classroom or library, and he found such comfort in the arms of women that he was soon more addicted to them than to the drink.
Then he fell in love with a barmaid, Lilly. Angus believed that this woman would make him happy and take away all his doubts and fears and melancholy. He stopped gambling and drinking for her, started working for his degree again, and married her. They were kind of happy - for a while. Then Lilly got pregnant. Angus dropped out of university, left town, and turned back to drink, gambling, and other women. He ‘married’ several other women but left them when they got pregnant. Meanwhile he’s been earning a little here and there, and been living off his wives’ incomes and father’s donations. His latest ‘marriage’ was to a girl named Ruth, but again, he abandoned her when she got pregnant.
