Anne Margaret Carrington, née Beckham, was the youngest and only one of her parents’ three children to survive into adulthood. Her parents feared she had a weak constitution too, and so she grew up very protected and got everything she wanted. Her parents never told her no and sheltered her from any of the challenges of life, so as not to excite her nerves. Still, the girl was sick a lot.
When Anne was a young woman, her father’s business ran into problems and the family had a tighter purse, much to Anne’s discomfort. However, she quickly managed to charm a wealthy young man called Magnus Carrington, who had a successful business, and who gave her all the pretty things she wanted. They were married within months.
Despite Anne’s continued health issues, they had nine children, and so everyone now had to do Anne’s bidding, because her body is a wreck and she’s two inches away from the grave. Anne’s great suffering is made greater still by what she perceives as her husband’s constant criticism and contempt and her youngest daughter Pearl being so, so selfish and not considering her mother’s nerves at all!
