Sure, you’ve heard the story of the classic treasure hunter a hundred times: an adventurous soul, on the search for hidden wealth who, after perils and pitfalls aplenty, ultimately succeeds or fails in their goal. Perrine Auvray is nothing short of the opposite. She had no interest in adventuring as a child, she was content to stay in Paris and find work ‘fit for a woman’- but all that changed when she met Renaud Frère when she was nineteen. He’d come to Paris with three friends on a treasure hunt spanning multiple countries and called to Perrine from the moment she first saw him. He convinced her a life of adventure was her greater calling and so she left Paris and her family behind, so infatuated she knew she’d follow him to the ends of the earth (and once, she nearly did, but that’s a story for another time). Four years passed and although Perrine and Renaud hadn’t made their fortunes yet, they’d fallen deeply in love and were engaged to be married in Autumn of 1892- but then Renaud began having vivid dreams of long-hidden riches, the greatest wealth he’d ever seen, and three days before their wedding, he vanished, leaving only a note saying he would one day come back for Perrine. Completely heartbroken, the young woman left Paris once more (as she and Renaud had returned there to be married) and aimlessly found her way to Whitby, a coastal town she’d never been to nor had even heard of before. 24 years of age by then, she bought a small cottage right on the seashore and has spent the last 2 years half-occupied lost in drink and half-spent combing the beaches and sandbars to bring in enough income to keep up her drinking habits and provide herself with food. |
