Lou grew up in Whitby, the fourth of seven siblings in a poor family, never expected to amount to much by his family, which was fine by him. He was content in Whitby and never desired anything much else from his life other than peace and a sense of normality. The ordinary things of life comforted Lou, and so he decided to become a cab driver and simply stay in Whitby for the rest of his life. It made perfect sense to him: he had no desire to see anything else of the world, he liked horses, and he didn’t mind making low wages. And so he bought a hansom cab, registered himself with the small cab service in Whitby, and brought people to and fro all across town. There were rarely any surprises in this line of service, except for the occasional pregnant mother on her way to the hospital, and so Lou was content. He never busied himself with matters of love, despite his parents’ nagging him to get married, and one by one, his siblings moved away from Whitby until only he and his parents lingered; soon enough, they too left the seaside town and only Lou remained. Ten years passed and Lou was no longer a young man and his loyal horse, Kip, was no longer a young mare; nevertheless, the pair continued their cab service and still do so to this day. |
