Meyer was born in London to middle-class parents and grew up in modest comfort. In school, he struggled with literacy but persevered in order to be able to teach his little sister Cordelia (the light of his life) how to read and write. Meyer’s talent lays in painting, but his parents dissuaded him from his dream of making a living through selling his art, believing his chances were slim. Their passing in November of 1894 grieved Meyer, but he mourned more for the light that left his sister’s eyes in the weeks following the carriage accident. Her right hand had been terribly injured, taking away what she loved the most (writing poetry), and it nearly killed Meyer to see her moping around the house all day, dressed in mourning black with a veil shrouding her face. It was he who wrote to their paternal grandmother, asking if they could move into Cedarworth Manor in Whitby with her, and was relieved when she agreed. Once there, he encouraged Cordelia to break the customary mourning tradition of not leaving the house for a year after their parents’ death, and he is glad to see her returning to her kind, optimistic self. However, Meyer himself is not dealing with the move well, finding it hard to adapt to this new way of life (even though it is much more comfortable than before), but he hides this for Cordelia’s sake. As the inheritance Meyer received from their parents was quite small (most of it went to fund a local orphanage, as they intended in their will), he is currently on the search for employment in Whitby. He still hungers to become a famous artist, but he knows he must find means of supporting himself otherwise before following that dream. |
