Gareth was born in Whitby. His father is a jet worker. His mother washes laundry to earn some extra money. His parents had (and still have) a miserable marriage, but if there was one thing they were united in, it was in saving every penny to make sure Gareth could have a good education.
Gareth went to a boy's boarding school near York. There he was miserable, but finally managed to make some friends by bullying the right kids. Until the tables turned, and he became the bullied kid.
Gareth's parents had hoped that he would go on to university, or get a respectable job as clerk at a bank or another place and work his way up. Gareth did none of these things - solely to spite his parents - and became a reporter for the local newspaper instead. He managed to rent his own cottage with his salary, and though it's poor, Gareth is happy with it because its his own. He's determined to work his way up to chief editor, and become wealthy and respectable that way, rather than follow the path his parents want for him. |
