Additional Info About Maggie Colley
Age: 21
Occupation: Fisherman's wife
Class: Working class
Origins: Whitby
History: Maggie was born to the Ward family living in the Cragg, Whitby, on 12 July 1874. The Wards were a fishing family, and from an early age, Maggie learned to work alongside her family to clean and prepare the lines. She had two older brothers, three younger sisters and two younger brothers, apart from two siblings who died in early infancy.

Their cottage was very small and so when Maggie wasn't helping her mother, she was playing outside or was in school. She was a reasonably good student and one teacher suggested she might apply to become a pupil teacher. Yet her mother was glad when she could pull Maggie out of school, for there was plenty of work to be done, and as the oldest girl, Maggie's help was direly needed.

Maggie would help her mother gather bait and prepare the lines, do domestic chores, or watch the little ones while her mother was gathering bait. She was a little sad about not learning on and gaining the status of a student pupil, but she loved her parents enough not to show it, and with all her friends out of school as well, she decided there was more fun to be had this way. She did feel some jealousy however, when her younger sister Alice was allowed to prepare to be a pupil teacher.

When Maggie was just fourteen, her older brother Tom drowned along with an uncle and cousin. After Tom was found and buried, the family went on with normal life, but everyone was a great deal sadder, and there were more tensions, especially between her older brother, Simon, and her father.

One year later, in winter, a bad wave of influenza plagued the town and her mother, weakened by a recent birth, died along with the newborn.

After this, Maggie had to fulfil her mother's role, looking after the children, preparing all the lines, nursing Alice, who had fallen ill, and taking care of all the domestic chores, helped by her younger sister Rose, and her sister Anne when the latter wasn't in school. Meanwhile, the relationship between her father and Simon became increasingly hostile and at times violent. Simon would stay out at night against his father's wishes, and return home drunk, or with money that wasn't his, and his father would only try to tighten his control over the young man and harden his approach. Her father's temper had been worse since Tom and her mother's death anyway. Maggie was eager to grow up and leave.

Then James Colley, a young Whitby fisherman, started courting her, and Maggie basked in the attention and promises of a happier life. She was soon head over heels for James. In December 1890, when Maggie was sixteen, her father finally allowed her to get married, after her ceaseless begging. Rose and Simon resented her for leaving them to deal with their father and leaving Rose to take on the responsibilities as oldest girl. Maggie felt somewhat guilty, but was also too happy to let that stop her.

As far as she knew, home continued to be tense, and one year later, Simon was arrested for murder and hanged the next Lent. Meanwhile Maggie's own happiness slowly dissolved as she settled into the harsh life of a fishwife, started feeling taken for granted, and struggled juggling a fishwife's work with pregnancies and motherhood. She has one boy, John, a baby girl, Hannah, and is now pregnant with her third and not too thrilled about it.
OOC Preferences: No limits in language. For violence, please discuss any maiming, torture, death, or harm to a child with me first. For sexual content, no rape (see rules as well!). I generally suck at NSFW threads.

Unless otherwise discussed, I will consider a thread dead/finished and move on if I haven’t had a reply in a month (a oneliner is A-ok. I just hate my plots stagnating and my character trapped in time). I’ll probably nudge you a week before or so, in case it fell off your radar.

If we are in a group thread, I would like everyone to have a chance to reply in turn. However, if I bombed your thread, don't wait for me if I'm not responding fast enough.
