Oh no. She was indeed from a good family. Now he'd have to be polite and nice to her and they'd have to exchange all sorts of pleasantries and those were the worst. He picked up the notebook and pen and handed them to her. "I'm afraid the pen will be of little use to you, Miss Whitlock. Allow me." And he picked a decorated fountain pen from the inner pocket of his jacket and handed it to the damsel in distress.

Cordelia was significantly surprised by this change in demeanor, but then she realized it must be her mention of her grandmother. Back in London, the name 'Whitlock' meant next to nothing, but now that she and her brother Meyer had moved to Whitby, people respected them for their relation to Eve Whitlock. She supposed it was natural to Mr. Carrington to change his demeanor when speaking to someone of a wealthy family, but as Cordelia was still getting used to her new social status, she found this peculiar. Nevertheless, she accepted the offered fountain pen, careful not to spill any more ink from her broken pen.

"Thank you, Mr. Carrington. I do hope we meet again-" No, she didn't. "-and I wish you a good day." No, she didn't.

"And you, Miss Whitlock," he said with a little bow. And when she left, he sat back down, only to scowl again. The ink had spread.
