RE: Just a walk - Rose Willaby - 06-14-2020

Rose stared in silence, shivering a little in the cold wind. The hotels behind then were less occupied than in summer and the promenade was largely empty. But Rose noticed a small steamer below carrying tourists into the harbour. "Oh goodness, they must be absolutely freezing!" she exclaimed. Whitby's fishing men went out to see on winter days, but they didn't do it for leisure.

He noticed her shiver and decided to take off his coat and wrap it around her shoulders. He would deal with the cold. "Here, take this," he said in doing so. He then turned his attention to where she was looking and speaking about.

Rose blushed when he wrapped his coat around her. Goodness, he was trying hard, wasn't he? She didn't mind. It was rather charming. Still, she didn't want him to get hypothermia. If he died, he couldn't marry her, and she'd be a maid forever. "You're too kind, Andrew, but I don't want you to freeze. Let's go down into tow, where we have shelter."

"As ye wish," he said, though he refused to take the coat back until then anyway. He was fine for the moment, it was cold but not unbearable or bitter in his mind. He turned around and began to walk in the direction indicated.

Rose felt a stranger mixture of pride and embarrassment as she continued to wear Andrew's coat. What would people say if they saw them like this? This was an obvious sign, wasn't it? "Are ye sure you're not cold?" she asked.

"I'll be just fine, lass," he said with a smile. He nudged her with his shoulder playfully and went on to say, "Gentlemen don't let ladies be cold."

Rose grinned playfully. "Well, I'm hardly a lady, but I'm pleased to hear ye're a gentleman."

"Ye're a lady to me," he said with a smile as he escorted her to where she wanted to go. "A pretty lady who deserves to be warm," he added. He wasn't trying to lay it on thick, it just happened.

Rose did not complain. He made his intentions clear, and she was well aware of her own. She preferred this type of clarity over the stress of having to figure out what he meant. "You are so sweet," she said with a smile. "I hope yer sweetness won't be the death of ye." They entered the old town. "How does yer family feel about you livin' so far away." Family was not unimportant to consider in a potential match. If she was to believe Maggie, a difficult mother-in-law could really make you miserable.

"I have ta be sweet to be a good baker," he said with a wink as they moved toward the old town. When asked about his family, he was quiet for a long moment, not liking to go there. But he liked her, maybe even more than just a little, and he said, "Well... I am an orphan, sad ta say. I got lucky to become an apprentice to a baker I once tried to pilfer from as a child. He gave me a place to stay and work and food ta fill me belly."
