RE: Gratitude - Ruth Blacke - 02-28-2021

She made no complaints about cleaning and actually hummed a ditty or two while she scrubbed, taking small breaks every now and then to see to Jacob's needs like feeding and changing him. The work didn't bother her at all. She did as thorough a job on her end as she could given the circumstances. "Do ye like werkin' here, Betsy?" she asked as she tucked the cloth under her knees better and moved to scrub some more. "They seem real kind like here."

"Oh yeah, working here is great."

Betsy says with a grin.

"Most of the time it's just Master Edward and he is never a bother. Just stays in his study for the most part. When he does have a request, he is always very polite about it. Minds his Ps and Qs better than most servants I know. Lot of work to do, of course, but that's not a bad thing."

She continued to scrub until her hands were raw and kept going. "I ain't ever been a maid affore but cleanin' is what we do as women... and cookin'... Angus ne'er seemed to pay attention to me clean house though. Ugh, that man. A right slob he is." She gestured with her rag and said, "Mark me words, I did more cleanin' up after him in one day than I am doin' here today." She waggled her head back and forth and went on, "Always wantin' his vittles right when he comes through the door, smellin' like an alehouse and puttin' his dirty boots on me clean table." She swiped the floor furiously then, "I could get used ta cleanin' a place like this iffin I had people like ye to werk with. Not some... Arsehole like Angus." She then sat up on her haunches, surveying her hard work.

"Well, I'm guessing that this Angus chap is the one that left you and your babe?" Betsy says as she continues to scrub right along next to Ruth. "Well, it's good yer not still moon-eyed over him. Any man who leaves his wife and son isn't worth the salt in his soup, you mark my words."

"Aye, Angus is me husband. Better off without him, I say. Can't be moon-eyed over a scoundrel like him. Oooh." She continued to scrub at the floor until the babe started whimpering, as if sensing his mother's shift in moods. Deciding it would be best not to be angry at the moment, she made herself calm down. "Anyway, ye're right. Not worth the salt in his soup." The baby calmed as she calmed and she went back to scrubbing.

"Aye, get yerself a divorce and find yerself a proper man. But going forward, ye should just all yer Angus Arsehole. The Groundskeeper for the estate is Angus MacLinktock and he is a right pleasant man. A bit loud but he has hisself a right proper family." Betsy giggles at the suggestion of the new name for Ruth's husband.

"Arsehole has a nice ring to it for him," she said with a laugh. She had the kind of laugh that filled the room in a good way. Lucky for her, she would not have to divorce someone she didn't know she wasn't actually married to, but that was another story that she would have to find out for herself one day soon. "How do ye think I am doin'?" she asked, indicating the work.

"Yer doing good work, iffin you weren't I'd have said something," Betsy says with a grin as she gets up and pops her back. "Come, have to clean the study next. If the master is out we can also work on getting some of the books on the shelves." They were just sitting in boxes currently since the servants were discouraged from working around Edward except for things that needed to be done daily. Like removing left over food from the room.

She smiled. Things were going to be looking up for her if she got this job. The fact that she was doing the work so soon after giving birth to her son should have said something about her work ethic. "And what if he is?" she asked out of curiosity.

"Then we will just tidy up after him," Betsy says as she leads the way to the study. "Which is how it is most days." She cracks the door and peeks within. "But apparently not today." She says as the room proves to be devoid of its usual inhabitant. "Well, that's good. Let's see how man of those books we can get out of the boxes while he is out." She leads the way over to them and gets to work.
