RE: Gratitude - Ruth Blacke - 03-18-2021

She would gently guide him to the couch and let him plop down from there. Then after he was settled and asleep, she did what she was intending to do, cleaning up after supper really quickly and taking the food and the empty plate away. She made it back to the kitchen. "It's time I find me way home," she murmured, tiredly. She would probably have to hire a hansom. It was getting quite late.

"Lord girl you look dead on yer feet." Eleanor says when Ruth comes in. "Just a moment, I'll talk to Angus see if he can hitch up the horses to the hansom and give you a ride home. Take a seat, take a seat." The head maid bustles over and guides Ruth to a spot by the fire.

She was most certainly dead on her feet it felt like. She had been on her hands and knees or on her feet all day doing hard work and hopefully impressing the right people. Ruth gave a smile as she gratefully sat down. "He ate, look," she said as she held up the plate. "I had ta watch him, but he ate..."

"That is wonderful," Eleanor says with a smile as she takes the plate. "Even if it isn't practical to watch a man like a misbehaving toddler to make sure he eats." The head maid lets out a sigh and pats Ruth on the shoulder. "Master Ambrose is scheduled to return on Monday, you can come back on that day and I am sure that he will give you an interview and a job."

"Tis most certainly not practical at all, but it seems it must be done. Oh, but I just want ta weep for the man. I know he is grieving, he must've loved his wife so very much." To have the love of a man was all she had wanted when she wed Angus, but he turned out to be a real asshole. She kissed her son on the top of his head. He was the only good thing to come out of that union other than maybe her growing up a lot.

"Oi, I will be here, then," she nodded.

True to what she'd been told about a week passes before, on the following Monday, she awakes to find a hansom outside her parent's home waiting to pick her up. The driver greets her and says with an incline of his head. "I'm here to take ya to the Blackwood manor. They told me you might not be expecting me, so if you need a few minutes to get yourself presentable take your time ma'am." He says when she comes out to inquire what he is doing there.

She was already up with the baby and dressed. She did need to tidy her appearance just a little, so she did, bundled Jacob up and said fairwell to her parents for the time being. She'd explained to them that she might already have employment lined up and would even be able to take Jacob with her. When she got in the hansom, she sat back and sighed, giving herself time to rest her eyes for the moment. She was certainly tired, but that was what new mothers had to go through. She realized that she had dozed off when there was a bump in the road or maybe they were about to halt, she didn't know. Ruth wiped her face free of the little dribble of drool.

Once she arrives at the manor Mister Lane is there to escort her through the house. She is lead to a study, it was neat and organized the furniture made of rich dark hardwood. Behind the deck is a man that bears a resemblance to Edward, though he is a bit shorter and stockier and his hair is straight instead of a curly mess. He eyes her his expression curious more than anything else as Mister Lane introduces her.

"Thank you Lane, I will take it from her." The man says as she settles down. "I am Ambrose Blackwood," He says considering her, his expression unreadable beyond that careful consideration. "The current head of the Blackwood family. I understand you are seeking employment within this house. Tell me, why should I hire you?"

She walked with Mr. Lane through the house quietly, not nervous but curious. When they arrived at the study, she gave a glance around and spotted who looked to be Edward's brother. She gave a smile, adjusting Jacob in the crook of her arm. When asked about why she should be hired, she said, "I am a hard worker and determined. I have patience and I am loyal. I think I would make a good asset to yer household." She did not brag that she had gotten Edward to eat his food. She could have, but she didn't think it was prudent when others might have already informed him.

"Those are Qualities Miss Blacke," Ambrose says arching his eyebrow. "And while they are indeed good ones to have, they are not demonstrable. At least, not without hiring you and observing you over a period of time. When talking to any employer, I recommend leading with the skills you have. Those are immediately demonstrable to your employer and he can be assured that you are capable of what he is paying you to do. Then more ephemeral qualities such as being a hard worker and being loyal can be seen as you work and rewarded. After all, a disloyal person would certainly say they were loyal and would act it right until they are not."

With that explanation out of the way he nods. "But my question was not exact, so I will not fault your answer. Let me rephrase, what skills do you possess that would make you an asset to my household staff?"
