Keep Your Grubby Fingers Off My Porcelain [Hotels, Pubs, and Accommodations] - Theodosia Strong - 06-21-2020

Something was afoot in Theodosia Strong's inn this morning, and she was not at all pleased by it. Firstly, a trio of unruly guests had completely sacked the room they'd rented and refused to pay for the damages until she called for the constable. Secondly, her cook and three servants had called in sick today because of colds, which seemed to be going around Whitby this week. Thirdly, and most frustratingly, the storm that had rolled in this morning had driven many beggars, lowlifes, and rowdy kids into the lobby of The Lassie's Faith. Theodosia didn't mind the poor souls with good intentions who just needed shelter for a bit, but the loud group of boys that were running around her lobby without a parent in sight, the four teenage couples sharing glances too flirtatious for Theodosia's liking, and the folks glancing around as they eyed up things to steal bothered her highly. It was an unfortunate day when she had to plant herself squarely in the middle of her lobby and keep an eye on each straggler along with a few of her servants, for no one wanted to catch Theodosia Strong in a bad mood.

The chaos did not bother Anthony one bit. Quite the contrary, really. He chose to try and take advantage of it. Though Anthony had actually never been in this specific inn before, he chose to enter today well before the anarchy ensued, and only stayed because there was so much going on that it would be very easy to do something and just...not have anyone notice. So many people, so many things for the staff to keep an eye on. Something was bound to remain unnoticed.

Anthony stood casually near a wall, eyeing something that he assumed would be fairly valuable, and as soon the right moment came....he just snatched it up.

Theodosia had a sort of knack for knowing when something was amiss and her gaze snapped to a man by the drawing room door as he picked up a small marble statue of an angel and swiftly slid it into a pocket. Immediately, Theodosia was hurrying across the floor, biting her tongue to keep from cursing aloud as she held her skirts up to move quicker. She made it across the lobby just in time to grab the man's arm and say sharply, "Excuse me!"

Ah, fuck. Anthony realized that he'd been caught. He took the thing out of his pocket and was just about to put it back, before the woman grabbed his arm and he literally couldn't do that. "What? What is it?" he said, playing the fool for a bit.

Theodosia kept an iron grip on the man's arm and glared daggers at him, though her tone was smooth as she replied, "Replace that statuette or I shall be forced to restrain you and call for the authorities." Theodosia was a stronger woman than she looked, and because of her gender, race, and social standing, she'd thought it wise to learn how to protect herself- and so she'd hired a boxing coach a few years back and knew quite well how to throw a punch and the best pressure points to hit to keep an assailant on the ground.

"Let go and I'll put it back, miss," Anthony said. No matter how tempting it was to just run off with the statue, it wasn't worth the trouble. No point in going to jail over this tiny bloody statue or whatever it was.

Theodosia released the man but kept a close eye on him. She snapped three times behind her back, her hand in sight of her strongest butler who stood by the door, and was sure he'd be ready to catch any person that tried to slip out of the inn unseen or sprint out the door, like she was worried this fellow might. "Keep your hands to yourself, sir, and we'll have no further problem," she said, her voice nearly a hiss at how peeved she was, and waited for him to put the statue back.

Anthony slowly put the statue back where it belonged, and raised his hands to show that they were empty. It was a bit of a shame that he had to return it, but oh well. It wasn't worth risking his life and livelihood over that shitty little statue. That's what he was telling himself, at least. "See? All's lovely, now."

Theodosia gave a stern look at Anthony. The only thing she'd ever laughed at was when someone said she had a sense of humor. "Assuredly so." Her tone was steely. She would have asked him to get going out of her inn had the storm not still been raging, but she reluctantly held her tongue and didn't snap at him like she wanted to.

Anthony nervously averted his gaze. "Yeah," he nodded. Didn't he just say that. "you get to keep your statue, I get to keep my life, everything's a blessing." Was she ever going to leave him alone, or was he going to be under her watch for the rest of the night?
