Simon could disappear for a couple of days again, like the last time things had gotten really bad. But he had stayed today, Ben told himself. Perhaps he had gotten through to his son at last. "I suppose."

Ben felt a wave of anger. But then he sighed. "I'm sorry, Elijah." He stopped walking and sighed again. "I have to stay strong for those bairns."

Elijah shook his head. "You still shouldn't push yourself. You will always be strong to us. It isn't about your body but your spirit and heart. You will always be seen as a source of strength and stability as long as you are still around for them when they need you."

"They need me on the boat," he said through gritted teeth while he forced himself to walk on at normal pace. He had felt his strength declining over time, but this weakness was rare. It disturbed him.
