RE: Never Say Die - Gareth Scott - 09-26-2020

Gareth returned in the same clothing but carrying a leather briefcase in his hand, that could double as a backpack. In it was some food, some money a book about the history of the Whitby area, and a waterproof. In his pocket, he carried a notepad and a pencil. Hidden underneath his jacket, there was a small revolver. He always carried when going out on a field trip in town at night, and he didn't think it a bad idea to carry it now. If there was money involved, he wasn't going to trust anyone.

He found the Marquis and the lady, glanced at the lady in trousers - oh the public would love this -, and nodded at the Marquis. "Ready whenever you are, sir."

Quentin gives the young man a nod. At least he had listened to the instructions on how to address him, even if young Gareth decided to still be needlessly formal. The big man didn't seem to notice or care that Claire was in trousers as he loads the two younger people into the carriage and it takes off at a decent trot. With the well worn path between Whitby and Glaisdale they could set a pace that would see them there faster than the train, especially in the fair weather that left the dirt sections of the road compacted.

It takes just under an hour to arrive. The time of day early in the afternoon. "Well Mister Scott, this is your chance to shine. See what you can find out about a Farris in this area." It wouldn't take much for Gareth to learn about the local landmark that was the Beggar's Bridge.

She said nothing as she was handed into the carriage. Her gaze was fixed on Gareth for a time, narrowed a little but not in any form of anger. It was more like she was trying to get a read on him. Then her attention moved to Quentin, watching him in almost the same manner. There wasn't really much to be said other than a greeting in the beginning. Son enough, her gaze drifted to the window of the carriage and she watched the scenery go by. She did finally say, "Isn't this exciting?" in a tone that suggested otherwise as far as the ride itself went.

Gareth felt a little annoyed that he was now supposed to do everything. Had the lady even proven herself? Or was she just here to look pleasant. But he nodded and walked over to a group of people. They chatted for a while and Gareth nodded. They pointed to someone else and Gareth made his way over and talked to an old man.

After a few minutes, he returned. "There's a local story of a chap named Tom Ferres, who built a local bridge over the Esk a few centuries ago." he shrugged. "And there's a Ferres family in the village. But considering the fact that we're looking for a river bank, I'd try the bridge..."

"Surprisingly this is the norm for adventures. When recounting them travel time is condensed to simply and then we took a carriage. When you actually have to live it though you can't just jump to the next part." He says chuckling at the petulent Claire. The girl clearly hadn't quite known what she had demanded her way into. Still, that was neither here nor there she was the one who had wanted to tag along so she would have to learn.

"Very good Mister Scott, let us proceed there at once."

The bridge was a short walk just outside of town, they had actually crossed over it on there way from Whitby. The River Esk flowed swiftly underneath it and they didn't even have to cross it on foot yet since they were on the west bank already. The next step for his young compatriots was finindg the hidden cache where the next clue was located. There was a loose brick marked with a knife in the pattern of a skull, that was what they were looking for.

"Well, let's get looking."

Quentin says smiling at the two of them in a way that suggested that what he meant was that it was time for them to get looking.

She blinked at Quentin's reply, a frown marring her brow. "I figured that," she said, and then shook her head. "I was just poin-- no, nevermind, it isn't important." She had only meant that they could have at least had a conversation whilst in the carriage, but that was neither here nor there. Then she smiled and out of the carriage she went when it was time to do so. She took the order as it was given and started moving about, keeping her eyes open for some kind of clue as to what was next. She didn't tag along just to look pretty, though she was blissfully unaware of the thoughts of the reporter and therefor went on with her business.

Gareth made his way over to the bridge, and looked around. "And how long has this treasure been hidden?" he asked, while he looked at the ground, searching for any place where the earth looked like it had been upturned. He used his foot to push some dry leaves out of the way, so he could get a better view, before deciding it was probably nothing, and moving to inspect a new patch of riverbank.

"The one we are looking for? Or the one you are looking for now?" Quentin inquires as he watchs the two young people scramble about on the river bank poking at things near and under the bridge. "The ultimate goal of this expedition has been hidden for slightly less than a hundred years." He says wondering who would be the first to think to start looking at the bridge itself for their quarry.

RE: Never Say Die - Claire North - 09-29-2020

It was by chance that Claire found a loose brick. She went to use the bridge to keep her from stumbling a little clumsily. She turned to the structure and tilted her head. "Hey... Come look at this." She wiggled the brick until it came out, and she traced her fingers over the skull carved there. She then peered into the spot where it had been and stuck her free hand inside. "I think it's a clue!" she said with breathless excitement. She hadn't looked as lively as that since punching Mr. Longbottom in the nose.

"Well, how do you know they are two different things?" said Gareth, with slight irritation in his voice. Why was that twit not even helping in the search? But Gareth got distracted from such bitter thoughts when he heard Claire call out to them, and he made his way over to see what was going on. He looked at the brick in her hand, and then crouched to peer inside the hole it had left.
