Ben walked along, but one girl broke away from the group and ran after them. "Wait! I remember seeing Alice this morning! On t' bridge. She didn't see me. Seemed in a rush. She passed over the quay in the direction of the station, but I had my own errands to run, so I couldn't follow her."

Elijah looked at her in surprise. "Thank you! " He looked to Ben. "Perhaps we should try?" He had sent her there earlier, but perhaps she'd gone back?

Ben nodded. "Thank you." he told the girl, and he started moving in the direction of the station as fast as he could walk, heart beating in his throat. What if Alice had gotten on a train? What if she was not in Whitby anymore? How were they ever to find her then?

Elijah saw the man rushing and took his arm. "It is ok, the train isn't scheduled to leave yet. We have time. Please don't push yourself."

"There's more than one train leaving from there. We don't even know..." he grasped for air and put his hands on the side of his head as panic rose. "We have to find her, Elijah. She's alone. She has no money on her. She might be in a strange town. All the things that could happen to her!"

Elijah frowned and took his shoulders. "Be strong, Ben. It'll be ok. We will find her. She hasn't even been gone for half a day. It'll be alright, please relax."

"If she got on a train..." But he took a deep breath and nodded. When they reached the station, there was a train coming in from Scarborough. It was crowded, with people getting up. Ben looked around desperately. "Alice! Anne!" Some people looked at him, but there was no response.

Elijah sighed before clearing his throat. He suddenly called out loudly and authoritatively, "Everyone stay where you are. I am Constable Crane and this train us going no where until all passengers are checked. We are looking for two missing persons. So if everyone can be patient and board in an orderly fashion so that I may check who is getting on, you will be on your way with out much delay!"

Many of the people seemed irritated. Gentlemen were checking their pocket watches and some women looked at Elijah sourly. And yet they formed some kind of file and passed Elijah. A dirty looking man shot out from the crowd and ran.
Meanwhile, the station master had approached: "Is anything the matter, constable Crane?"

Elijah let the man run, thinking he should deal with that strangeness later and he apologized to everyone as they boarded. When the station master approached, he nodded to him.
"Sorry, sir, but we have a couple of missing persons. We had reason to believe they might be getting onto this train, possibly by force. I promise I am not trying to delay this any more than possible. I know everyone is on a schedule."
