James left the door, but he didn't quite leave.
If Zech were to look out of his window, he might see the top of a child's head, James' eyes just above the window sill.

Benny had heard the knock, so he'd returned. He had a towel slung over his shoulder looking rather annoyed. "Just a brat who wants a job, sir. I'll get rid of him." He reached to open the door but made sure he kept his body against it so it couldn't be pushed open or the kid could try to slip by.

James was still by the window rather than door. He put his dirty hands around his mouth and against the glass. "Excuse me seeeeer!" he shouted. "I'm James Longbottooooom! I want to applyyyyy!"
