Physical Description: |
In her youth, Maggie was blessed with porcelin soft features, a heart-shaped face, a pair of bright blue eyes, all framed with a mop of golden blonde hair. She was described that 'there is something about you that just translates well on paper'. She wore whatever was sewn together, usually in natural shades.
Youth and country living were good to her general physique. As she grew older and rose in wealth social standing, she lost many of the hallmarks of poverty. Even as her golden hair faded to silver, she was still giftted with an appearance that defied her age.
No longer wearing cheap hand-me-downs in rustic shades, living in London and more exotic locations, has made her wardrobe even more sophisticated. |
History: |
Margaret’s history is a remarkable one with very humble roots.
Her mother, Mary, was a laundress in a boarding house in the East End of London. The father was a sailor and they had already had one child together who sent some letters and gifts but often disappeared for months at a time. Eventually learning of his death in the South Atlantic, Mary learnt she was with child a second time. she fled London with her tiny family, heading for Warwickshire, relying on the kindness of family to fill the gap. There she gave birth to Margaret or Maggie. Eventually, she became acquainted with a local labourer, John Gladwin who doted on her in exchange for clean shirts, and while not being conventionally handsome, Mary soon fell for his kindness, simple honesty, and consistent presence.
Seizing the opportunity to give her daughters a normal life, Mary and John were married. John even got employment locally as a labourer digging the route of the expanding railway lines. Mary and John eventually had 3 more children, though one did not survive a year. Only when their younger brothers were older did Maggie and her sister notice that they looked different from their siblings. The odd snippet of whispered gossip did not help. Mary had made the conscious decision to hide the girl’s true origins from them until they were old enough to fully understand.
Maggie and her sister were therefore raised as simple country lasses enjoying simple country pleasures. Maggie loved the outdoors and would spend as much time as she could in nature. The family’s prospects improved even more when their father was again employed with the railway, this time as a platelayer on a railway gang helping to now maintain the new railways. This kept him closer to home and meant more money for the family.
In 1852, Maggie landed a job at Stoneleigh, a grand house being renovated nearby. She was excited to work for a grand family and hoped to progress in the staffing hierarchy. However, when her daughters turned 18, Mary revealed their true origins to them, shocking Maggie and straining their relationship. Maggie grew up to be a hardworking and kind person who loved nature and the outdoors. She got a job as a laundress at Stoneleigh, a grand house, and eventually became friends with the family. However, she was devastated when her friend Eve took ill and was suspected of having an affair.
Maggie's life took a dramatic turn when she met Orlando Swinburne, an artist visiting Stoneleigh, who sketched her portrait. She began to contemplate her future and expressed a desire to become a lady's maid. She eventually became the lady's maid for the Baroness Hastings, which marked a significant social climb for her.
As she adjusted to her new role, Maggie made new friends and received etiquette lessons to improve her speech and demeanour. In 1855, she moved to Mayfair and was introduced to influential people, including the Duchess of Devonshire. The Duchess offered her advancement opportunities as maid, which Maggie decided to pursue, which led to her being fired on the spot by Baroness Hastings. Maggie then sought refuge at the Duchess of Devonshire's townhouse, where with a new job she nursed her wounded pride.
She proved effective enough as a lady’s maid to the Duchess and over time became a confidante and companion. Maggie could now read and write, and her accent was polished out evenly Eventually, the Duchess saw fit to elevate Maggie or Margaret as she was now known to her private secretary.
It was in this capacity that she met Lieutenant Ramsey, RN a dashing young officer visiting who swept poor Maggie's heart away like the tide, though Maggie suspected the sparkle in the Duchess’ eye when the couple were together, suggested her employer’s hand in the plot, as the woman had remarked that a man like Ramsey would be a suitable husband for Maggie back when the latter was still a maid.
With the Duchess’ blessing the two were married quickly and quietly in Chatham and soon boarded a boat for bound for the naval dockyard in Malta. Perhaps any scandal would disappear while she was away. As a naval officer's wife, Maggie’s horizons were broadened like she had never dreamed of. As the years went by, she seemed to follow her husband further east away from England: Aden, Ceylon, Singapore, and Calcutta.
Eventually, all journey’s end and for Maggie and her family it was back to England, in some ways a foreign country to them now. With her husband’s retirement from the navy, Maggie has settled down to enjoy her last years in a quiet town by the sea surrounded by her family.
