History: Ramses Kotb was born in the Siwa Oasis in what would someday be known as the country of Egypt. Born to a Coptic Christian Egyptian mother and a Muslim Egyptian father. Ramses was a younger twin son of his fathers third wife and even after his twin he was the fourth son in line to inherit so Ramses grew up from an early age knowing not to expect anything from life and yet fate would give him what some of his colleagues might call a generous gift while Ramses often found this gift isolating in nature. Ramses could be found pondering the Why’s of the world even as a young child. Why did Allah choose Muhammad? Why did Allah choose then to let the “true faith be known?”, Why did Jesus have to die? Why did God not send his son sooner?, Why am I alone? Why don’t the other children play with me? Why does Arabic sound like this while Coptic sounds like that? Why do we exist?

All these questions and many more swirled and drifted through Ramses head night and day like a sandstorm in the Sahara often leaving Ramses unable to sleep until he could quiet his mind. Usually this was after wondering the dirt roads of Siwa at night carefully pondering things he saw or things that occurred earlier in the day. Ramses eventually caught the unwanted attention of a local man and before Ramses knew it he found himself enslaved to the man. Enslaved is a bit of a harsh word but that is how Ramses thinks of it but does not dare to say such to most Europeans out concern that his bad experience with the Siwan particular vice and customs would paint to a European a picture of Egypt as backward and needing of Enlightment. Ramses had enough enlightenment thrust upon him when a traveling European found Ramses to be a future investment as he showed intelligence and more importantly the will to search for knowledge through his primarily self taught nature of Arabic and Coptic. Ramses often wonders why he was chosen and his brother was not for he always thought his older twin brother was smarter. Ramses was taken to London, given a first class education and indoctrinated or so they tried into English customs although when he was baptized as Richard in one of those english churches as a good gesture he refused to ever respond or acknowledge this to the point that his stubborn will forced his caretaker to call him by his name Ramses lest he lose his long term investment. What a good investment Ramses was indeed, through “proper European education” Ramses was able to achieve a level of intelligence that surpassed his caretaker and his caretakers family which he always felt ambivalent toward but sometimes frustrated with the way they only seemed to want to know how sometimes worked or how something came to be rather then the why of it… perhaps this was a philosophical difference or personality? Ramses still is not certain. Just as he is not certain how he feels about his romantic experiences in boarding school, the sensations were at times painful while other times sweet and yet why do I feel uncertain? Shouldn't I feel okay? Why do people in London find it odd to wonder such thinks and if you speak your endless wondering out loud they look at you weirdly just as people of Siwa did? Why did others gawk at foreign art and statues, artifacts of our humanities past? Because it was different from there’s? Then why do I feel a ache in my heart at the beauty of our diversity and yet the similarities in our primal emotions: fear, joy, love, sadness etc. Such usually silent introspective experiences at museums and private collections of individuals who disliked the people whose artifacts they hoarded all played a role in developing a dislike for colonialism as a agent of benefitting the few at the expense of the many.

Ramses found little time away from such thoughts that lurked in his mind always ready to come to surface even when he was busy helping his caretaker translate and analyze ancient works stolen from the likes of his homeland. Ramses eventually found himself helping a Belgian named.. Koenraad and for the better or worse the pair seemed to work albeit not perfectly but what ever worked perfectly in the world? This is when Ramses would say that the natural world seems to work good even if humanity tries to separate itself from it. What else can there be said for Ramses? The Egyptian found himself doing more for the inner conserning questions he had such as why must artifacts leave their peoples lands? Why cant all people get along? While such questions still lurked the mans mind as did the endless thoughts.. the insomnia seemed to ease with each greedy foreigner they prevented all the while allowing Ramses opportunities to ponder, learn, and analyze and experience the people and learn about ancient civilizations he loved. While Ramses knew of history buffs that claimed only one culture as their favorite.. Ramses would ponder how it is possible that he loved all the civilizations he learned about as if each one were a relative. This was hard for Ramses to explain to Koenraad and it did not seem appropriate to express such things to a man suffering from disease that left them in England. Ramses finds himself more and more pondering why he cares so much for his colleague and the insomnia has returned leaving Ramses to remain awake far into the night.
