Shivaughn was born to a small family less than a decade after slavery was abolished in Trinidad, and growing up, she felt the effects of it. People were rarely kind to a young black girl, and less so to one as fiercely independent, loud, and outspoken as Shiv.
She grew up to hate her home town, and everything about the people around her. The only people safe from her wrath was her family, who she would defend with her life.
Eventually, Trinidad grew boring for Shiv and her siblings. Over the coarse of a year, they convinced their parents to travel, start somewhere new. They told Asha and Christian that it would be a good change of pace, and eventually, the couple relented.
They did not survive the long trip across the ocean.
The three siblings arrived and were distraught. How were they to live and survive without their parents?
Shiv felt immense guilt for her parents passing, and is determined to make it up to her siblings. She works hard to start her own baking business and earn enough money to live off of, but it is not easy.
The world has not been kind to the Bakshs, and it was not about to start now.
Every attempt to start a small business failed, and Shiv lost more and more money. Each time, her siblings would have to move to a cheaper residence in a cheaper town.
Today, they are in Whitby, and Shiv is trying again to make a living doing what she loves. This time, she is working as an assistant instead of trying to start something new on her own, but it's only a matter of time before she does just that. |
