History: Frederic never meant to fall in love. He had no dreams of starting a family. But then Patsy came into his meager shop in Scarborough, looking to order a replica of an old family grandfather clock that was no longer working, and as soon as he laid his eyes on her, Fred knew he was in love. The clock was an old family heirloom, she’d explained, and was priceless to her family- could he make a replica like it? Of course he could, but instead, he went to her parents and offered to fix the grandfather clock itself if he could- for free. They agreed and on Patsy’s birthday, three weeks later, he revealed the repaired clock to Patsy and her family. From there on out, Fred and Patsy were inseparable and married within the year. Her parents quickly accepted Fred into their family and the pair made a home on the floor above Fred’s clock store.
As Patsy had a condition that could kill her if she had children, multiple doctors warned her against kids, but this was fine with both her and Fred, as they were happy just as they were. Still, these things are bound to happen in time with a young couple in love, and so when Patsy became pregnant at 28, she and Fred simply prepared and hoped for the best. When their son Clover Buck was born (Buck after his grandfather, Patsy’s father; Clover after Fred’s best friend as he had no living family), it was the happiest day of Fred’s life, although he hadn’t expected as such. They were poor, but they would do anything for their child, and all seemed well with Patsy for the first few weeks after Clover’s birth- but then a rupture in her internal organs was discovered and she abruptly passed away when Clover was only three weeks old. Fred’s sorrow nearly overwhelmed him, but he decided to sell his store and leave behind Scarborough and Patsy’s parents, who blamed him for their daughter’s death. He took Clover to Whitby and raised the boy the best he could as a single parent, opening another clock store there and making a meager but modest living for himself and his son.
