The Dunlop family had long lived reclusive lives in the northernmost woods of Scotland, hunting and foraging to survive. When a terrible bout of cholera took out almost the entire family when Mairead was only two, her father Odhran decided to move a little closer to civilized society and began selling pelts, meat, bone, and whatever else he got from hunting. He soon became a skilled tradesman and was offered a home in various towns many times throughout his life, but he always refused, preferring the peace and simplicity of the forests. He taught Mairead everything he knew and by her eighteenth birthday, the protegee had surpassed the master. Odhran’s health has been deteriorating for the last few years, and despite how Mairead often pushed him to seek aid in modern medicine, he always refused, trusting in the old Scottish gods to show him the way. Four months ago, in September 1894, Odhran went missing, leaving a note for Mairead behind the carving he’d made of her mother Aoife’s face on the mantel, knowing she’d only find it when the anniversary of Aoife’s death arrived in late December. The note pointed to Whitby in England as where he’d gone, and so Mairead quickly packed her bags and made the long journey south to the seaside town, determined to find her father or, if he’d died, to learn of his fate. |
