[Cw: Stalking]

Pearl Carrington was what people were starting to consider a mess. Ever since her kidnapping, it seemed that she had gone mad in a way, refusing to live at home with her parents and her father allowing it, not wanting to marry even though she was seen in the company of a certain salesman and subject to town gossip as such. Her father was starting to dislike the idea of her being alone and not having some sort of protection. After all, she was a mere female even with all the weird things she did.

So, unbeknownst to the young woman, he had hired a bodyguard for her. He was looking after her best interests when he made this move. Added to that, there were rumors surrounding his eldest son that, if true, was making his skin crawl and he wondered if anyone in the Carrington clan was safe from Magnus IV.

Pearl was blissfully unaware of any of these things; she was busy shopping with her maid, Tilly. “I think this red fabric would make a wonderful cloak,” she said to the maid with a smile, admiring the bolt of red velvet that was, indeed, good for a cloak. She paid for that and thought fur would be a good liner for warmth in the miserable weather that was winter. Sure, her current cloak was just fine, but she had always wanted a red one.

They placed the bolts of fabric and fur into her cart next to the new cookware she bought for her kitchen, and Pearl decided it was time to send the maid home with a couple of strapping lads to empty the cart. “You take this money and find some help. I don’t want you doing the heavy lifting, you hear?” she said and Tilly gave a nod. They were off.

Pearl, in the meantime, took herself to the bakery and peered in through the window in curiosity, then decided against going in because she didn’t want to intrude on her friend Rose’s territory just yet. She would meet Andrew soon enough, she thought, when he and Rose were married. Besides, she had nothing she wanted to buy from him that day. Her family gave him plenty of money for bread and Pearl preferred to bake her own.

She stepped away from the bakery and approached someone selling fish. Ahhh, yes, she hadn’t had fish in a while. She purchased a few fish and hummed merrily, an idea forming in her head as to what she would make with her purchase. In essence, the girl was flitting about the marketplace buying food and putting it into her basket.

The girl was quick at each stall, unaware of her brother’s spy lurking in the shadows and following her about as if stalking Pearl. She simply continued on her way while the man was a mere ten feet behind her.
