He heard the words, and he knew they were right but it was wrong. It felt wrong. He was so happy to be around this priest and if he could just avoid getting into his pants it would be fine. Though a few moments ago proved how tempting Gabriel was. The words still struck him hard when they descended upon him and he thought his heart would simply stop beating. He stared at him , feeling fragile like a small breeze would shatter him.

"Is.. is that what you really want?"

Gabriel still avoided meeting his eye. He was afraid he would cry if he did. "It's for the best, Elijah," he evaded the question.

Elijah looked away and covered his eyes as the tears fell. He trembled and headed to the door, having forgotten about the basket completely. "Then... I won't bother you..again. I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused. " He hiccupped as he struggled not to audibly cry and almost blindly reached the doorknob to leave. "Goodbye Father.." His voice cracked and he opened the door to go.

Those words pierced him more than anything Elijah had said so far. He wanted to call out to Elijah, tell him he was sorry, ask him to stay. But he knew he wouldn't be able to face himself. And so he turned around so he wouldn't have to see Elijah leave and Elijah wouldn't see his face, and he dug his hand into his cassock, reaching for his rosary. The Holy Virgin had surrendered willingly to God's decree. The Holy Virgin had given up the one she loved most.

"Goodbye," he said quietly.

Elijah paused as he heard that and numbly nodded as he left , trying his hardest to not let anyone see the constable break down in an alley not far away.
