She nodded and stood, then said a soft, "Goodnight, Mister Appleton." Iris slowly made her way to her room, although she paused at the bottom of the stairwell, "I... no... goodnight..." and then she was gone as if a wisp of air, disappearing upstairs with soft footfalls that were rapid enough to put some distance between her and the man. When inside her room, she shut the door with a soft click and then settled her forehead against the door.

After she had gone, Tobias still looked at the stairs puzzled. Then he shook his head, put out the lamps and made his way to his own bedroom.
