The orphan - Benjamin Ward - 10-04-2019

Ben was sitting in the yard, repairing a net, while showing two small boys how to do it. The older one was sitting on the ground on his knees. He was young, but already old enough to help out here and there. The younger one was sitting in his father's lap, watching, while his father explained things. Hannah was sitting besides them, watching and breastfeeding an infant girl.

Elijah, a boy, came running over and coming to a stop nearby. He was a quiet boy but after the fire, he was near silent. After coming up to them he looked over to see what they were doing.

He was about to wave, but stuffed his hands in his pockets and nodded to the man and his wife. "...Hello "

Benjamin held out an arm. "Elijah. Come here son." He had been good friends with Elijah's father, and the fire had deeply affected him. He felt responsible for this young boy.

Elijah looked up and walked instantly to his side. He stared down to watch them tie the nets. He leaned towards the man's arm wanting a hug however small.

Ben put his arm around the boy's shoulders, gently, because he knew the kid had been severely injured and he was always careful not to hurt him. "How's your grandparents, lad?"

Elijah shrugged slightly. He spoke softly, "Granda's been sick. I've been helping in the field a little."

"There's a good lad." said Ben, but he frowned. He should go check on the grandparents soon, to make sure they were managing. "Sit down, I was showing Tom and Simon how to fix a net. It might help ye earn some pennies one day as well."

Hannah had carried the baby in, in the mean time, and now returned with some water for the children and tea for Ben. She handed Elijah his cup as well.
"Ye tell yer grandmother I'll come and see her tomorrow."

Elijah looked curious at the nets and nodded to try. He thanked Hannah and took the cup, sipping it. "She doesn't go out as much since her foot's been aching something terrible." He nervously grabbed the netting to try to tie it but winced as his sensitive fingers felt like they would be cut on the tough line but he didn't want to give up.

"We pray she recovers..." Hannah said, and then left to go back inside.

Ben's hands were rough and the skin thick. He could barely imagine the lines would hurt. "Here..." he said, and he took the piece Elijah was working on. "Ye hold these parts, and then..." he repaired that part. "Tom, come help him."

The small boy sat down next to Elijah and began to show him, evidently very proud that he knew better.

Elijah watched Tom work and tried to repeat it. He could tie but it was very slow and he was soon in tears as it had become even more painful.
